Should You Repair or Replace a Damaged Bumper?
By K SAM Automotive Inc. · Updated
The short answer
Repair it if the damage is scuffs, small cracks or a shallow dent and the mounting tabs are intact. Replace it if the cover is torn, has several cracks, has broken mounting points, or if the parts behind it are damaged.
When a bumper can be repaired
Most modern bumper covers are plastic, and plastic can be reshaped, filled and refinished. Repair usually makes sense when the damage is cosmetic or limited to one area.
- Scuffs and scrapes from posts, curbs or garage walls
- A single crack shorter than a few centimetres, away from the edges
- A shallow dent where the plastic has not creased or split
- Paint damage with the cover itself still sound
When replacement is the better choice
A repair has to hold its shape and stay attached for years. When the plastic is torn or the points that hold it to the car are broken, a repair is unlikely to last.
- Tears, holes or several cracks across the cover
- Broken mounting tabs or clips that hold the bumper in place
- Damage to the absorber, reinforcement bar or brackets behind the cover
- Damaged parking sensor or camera mounts that cannot be rebuilt
Check behind the cover
A bumper that looks only scuffed can hide broken brackets, a crushed foam absorber or a bent reinforcement bar. Those parts are what protect the car in the next impact, so they matter more than the cover. Any honest estimate should account for what is behind the bumper, not just what you can see.
What a good bumper repair looks like
The finished bumper should sit flush with the fenders and headlights, with even gaps on both sides. The colour should match the panels beside it in daylight, and any sensors should work normally.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a bumper?
Repair is usually cheaper for cosmetic damage. Once the cover is torn or the mounts are broken, replacement can cost about the same and lasts longer.
Can a cracked bumper be fixed?
A single small crack away from the edges can often be repaired from behind and refinished. Long or multiple cracks usually mean replacement.
