Just been in an accident?
- 1
Make sure everyone is safe
Check yourself and your passengers. If anyone is hurt, or if there is fire, a fuel leak or a hazard on the road, call 911 first.
- 2
Move out of traffic if it is safe
If the vehicles can be moved and it is safe and legal to do so, move them out of live traffic. Turn on your hazard lights.
- 3
Exchange information
Get the other driver's name, phone number, licence number, plate number, insurance company and policy number. Note the make, model and colour of each vehicle.
- 4
Photograph the scene and the damage
Take wide shots showing where the vehicles are, then close ups of every damaged area on every vehicle. Photograph the other plate and any road signs or signals. These same photos can start your K SAM estimate.
- 5
Record witness details
If anyone saw the collision, ask for their name and phone number. Witness details can matter later.
- 6
Check whether you must report the collision
Ontario requires some collisions to be reported to police, for example when someone is injured or when damage is over a set dollar amount. In Toronto, Toronto Police currently direct drivers to a Collision Reporting Centre when combined damage is over $5,000 or other conditions apply. Check the official rules for your situation:
- 7
