Repair guide
How Long Does Collision Repair Take?
By K SAM Automotive Inc. · Updated
The short answer
Minor cosmetic repairs can take a day or two. Moderate collision damage often takes several days to a couple of weeks. The biggest factors are the extent of hidden damage, parts availability and, for insurance claims, how long approvals take.
What decides the timeline
- Hidden damage: what is found once panels come off can add work
- Parts: some parts are in stock locally, others have to be ordered
- Paint: each coat needs time to cure before the next step
- Mechanical work: suspension, steering or cooling damage adds time
- Approvals: insurance claims can add days while estimates are reviewed
Rough guide by type of damage
Every vehicle is different, so treat these as general ranges rather than promises.
- Scratch or scuff refinishing: about one to two days
- Single dent or bumper repair: about one to three days
- Several panels after a collision: about one to two weeks
- Structural or major damage: two weeks or more
How to keep it moving
Send clear photos early so the shop can start planning and checking parts before the car arrives. Have your insurer and claim number ready if it is a claim, and answer approval questions quickly. Ask for an estimated completion date and to be told if it changes.
Common questions
Why did my repair take longer than estimated?
The most common reasons are hidden damage found after disassembly, parts on back order, and waiting for approval on additional work.
Can I drive my car while waiting for repairs?
Only if it is safe and legal: lights work, nothing is loose or dragging, and the car drives normally. If you are not sure, have it checked first.
