Can a Dent Be Repaired Without Repainting?
By K SAM Automotive Inc. · Updated
The short answer
Often, yes. If the paint is not cracked or chipped and the metal has not stretched or creased sharply, a dent can usually be worked back into shape without repainting. Deep dents, sharp creases and dents with damaged paint need body work and refinishing.
Dents that can usually avoid repainting
- Round door dings and parking lot dents
- Shallow dents on flat or gently curved panels
- Hail dents where the paint is intact
- Dents with easy access from behind the panel
Dents that usually need refinishing
- Any dent where the paint is cracked, chipped or flaking
- Sharp creases, especially along a body line
- Dents at the very edge of a panel
- Large dents where the metal has stretched
How to tell from a photo
Take the photo in daylight, at an angle to the panel, so the reflection shows the shape of the dent. Then take a close up of the deepest point so the paint condition is visible. A straight on photo hides the depth of a dent.
Why it matters
Keeping the original paint avoids colour matching entirely, and is usually faster and less expensive. When repainting is needed, the repair should still be finished so it cannot be seen.
Common questions
What is paintless dent repair?
A technique where the dent is pushed or pulled back into shape without sanding or repainting, keeping the original finish. It works best on shallow dents with intact paint.
Can a creased dent be repaired?
Yes, but a sharp crease usually needs body work and refinishing because the metal has stretched and the paint is often stressed along the crease.
